Obsidian Entertainment has once again released a great game. Although Avowed is not the third installment in the Pillars of Eternity series that fans were hoping for, the game captures the look and feel of the franchise, bringing players back to the enchanting world of Eora.
The Blix team has compiled an opinion on the new Avowed game, which Obsidian will release early next week.

Avowed’s Early Access Review
Critics’ Reviews
Judging by the first evaluations, journalists were generally satisfied with what they saw—when publishing the news, Avowed had 80 points on Metacritic, 81 points on OpenCritic, and 84% of reviewers recommended the game.
Reviewers mostly praise the enjoyable gameplay, which features a diverse combat system, a good exploration element, and an engaging narrative.
However, independent critics were not as satisfied as the editions. Many noted the “title’s toothlessness“,” lack of really fresh ideas, and outdated game design elements.
Separate complaints focus on optimization, with many bugs, crashes, broken saves, etc. We’ll determine whether these flaws will be fixed with the first-day patch at the release.
We agree with PC Gamer the most:
Humble and a little old-fashioned, but Obsidian’s decades of RPG experience still shine through.
Advantages of Avowed
- The game combines a compelling fantasy story with existential seriousness and sarcastic humor. Obsidian is good at writing fantasy. The dialog in Avowed feels more natural and less “cartoonish” than in The Outer Worlds. Even the non-plot NPCs have their own stories, which is appealing.
- Obsidian has done a good job on the soundtrack in battles, and it can’t help but feel good. The atmosphere has become even more authentic.
- You have absolute freedom: in Avowed, you can play as both a kind and a ruthless person. You are also free to explore locations, and your decisions are not artificially restricted. What was complained about in Kingdom Come 2, more in the article: Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Is Finally Here—Fans React to the Long-Awaited Sequel.
- During their adventure, the player can make large-scale and small decisions affecting the passage.
- The combat system has several different styles, using swords, hammers, bows, spells, and other equipment. Depending on your preference, you can use a weapon in each hand or rely on magic for ranged attacks.
- In the game, you will also experience the feature to include third-person or first-person combat.
- The character animations during movement and battles in Avowed are an absolute pleasure. This has a positive effect on the gameplay in general, as it is a pleasure to control the character.
Disadvantages of Avowed
- You will be disappointed if you want to see a storm of new things in Avowed. Nothing special about it makes the game stand out from other RPGs. But if you wanted a good game in the genre and a bit of nostalgia, you’ll get it.
- There are few opportunities to control the satellites during combat. Because of this, their behavior during battles sometimes looks rather clumsy. And for those who like independence – satellites too often give you hints.

Conclusion
Avowed will be released on February 18 on PC (Steam) and Xbox Series, including Game Pass. Of course, February 2025 has been a busy one, with Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, AssAssassin’seed Shadows, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Sid MeiMeier’svilization.
VII is all set to see the light of day. It may be strategically wrong to release Avowed now, but we’ll be able to tell exactly how much users will enjoy the game.
