Vanguard Error in League of Legends – What is It

If you are new to League of Legends, you probably don’t know that Vanguard is a special anti-cheat tool. It first became available in Valorant, but Riot decided to add it to League of Legends as well.
Vanguard’s goal is to prevent the use of cheating software while playing. People who attempt this will be blocked from accessing the game, making the tool very efficient.
Due to how it works, it is possible to get different kinds of errors. Most of them are caused by interference from third-party software, but it could also be because of a hardware or system settings issue. Each Vanguard error usually has a special VAN code that you can use to determine the issue, so here are some of the things you need to know:
- VAN 57 – This is usually the code you get when Vanguard is not running
- VAN 84/185 – In most cases, you will get this code when there are multiple sessions or long usage
- VAN 128 – This is when there was a problem with the install process
- VAN 152 – This is a hardware ban
- VAN 9001-9006 – Windows users have disabled their security features
How to Fix Vanguard Errors in League of Legends
You can usually fix the different connection errors you may get (VAN 0, 1, 6, 68, etc.) by restraining your client. We have also tried restarting our PC, and it worked, but after several other tests, we believe that restarting your client is enough.
In the case where Vanguard is not running or it is blocked by something, you should do the following:
- Restart your client and/or PC
- Reinstall the client (if the error is still there)
- Check if Riot Vanguard is installed
If you get any of the VAN 100/101 errors, it is usually because of corrupted files while installing. The best decision here is to restart the client and try to reinstall both Vanguard and League of Legends.
Here are a few other codes and how to fix them:
- VAN 138 – This error appears when you play using a virtual machine. From our tests, the best decision is to try reinstalling the game on a real Windows PC.
- VAN 152 – This is probably one of the worst Vanguard errors in LoL you can get because you will see it if you are banned. Sadly, there is not much you can do here besides talking to the support department.
Tips on How to Avoid Getting Vanguard Errors in LoL
Ideally, you should avoid getting any of the Vanguard error codes mentioned so far. This is not always possible, but there are a few steps that might drastically reduce the frequency of these codes:
- Keep everything up to date
- Close down any suspicious apps that you believe may affect Vanguard’s performance
- Check your PC for any malware
