ESL has announced that it will expand its playoff format to eight teams starting in 2027, replacing the six-team system currently used across its Counter-Strike 2 tournaments.
The update will bring back a full quarter-final stage, with all qualified teams beginning the playoffs from the same round in a single-elimination bracket.

Eight Teams To Qualify For The Playoffs

Under the new format, eight teams will advance from the group stage to compete in the playoffs. All eight teams will start in the quarter-finals, removing the direct semi-final berths currently awarded to the top two teams.
The existing six-team system sees the top two sides progress directly to the semi-finals, while teams placed third to sixth play out the quarter-finals. This structure will be phased out in favor of an eight-team full bracket.
Return of Full Quarter-Finals
The change will expand the playoff stage to four quarter-finals, up from two.
This increases the number of matches played in front of a live audience and allows more teams to feature in the arena portion of events. The single-elimination format will remain unchanged, aside from the addition of the extra round.
Set For The 2027 Season
The new playoff format is scheduled to come into effect in 2027 and will apply across ESL’s tournament ecosystem.
The tournament organizer has not yet provided further details on whether the expansion will result in adjustments to the group stage or the qualification process.
Tournament Format Shift

The move marks a shift away from the six-team playoff format that ESL has used in recent years, reintroducing a structure that more closely resembles traditional Counter-Strike 2 events with full quarter-final brackets.
No additional changes have been announced at this stage.
