A Review of the Contender for Game of the Year – Blue Prince
Quite unexpectedly, the puzzle game Blue Prince with roguelike elements topped the ratings of released games of 2025, receiving 92 points on Metacritic and 91 on OpenCritic – the best result among all releases of the year’s first half.
On both aggregators, critics gave the indie project top marks, ranking it above even such high-profile releases as Split Fiction (91 and 90), Monster Hunter Wilds (88 and 89), and Kingdom Come: Deliverance II (88 and 89).
What’s the Game About?
Blue Prince is a puzzle roguelike in which the player explores a hereditary mansion to reach the legendary 46th room, which is not on the official blueprints. The game offers a unique approach to progression, forcing players to learn the mechanics and take notes by hand thoroughly.
Gradually, a simple concept turns into a complex system with many secrets and interconnections, which has delighted critics.
The peculiarity of the puzzle is that the players decide which of the three rooms will be behind the next closed door. Thus, they gradually fill the map, which consists of nine cells in height and five – in width.
In each room, you can find key valuable items and get bonuses and adverse effects that affect the entire race. You need to move around the building wisely because, at first, there is a limit of 50 steps – one for each door.
Blue Prince is a masterful game that blends strategic planning, narrative depth, and a dynamic world into an unforgettable experience that demands to be played, analyzed, and celebrated.

Strengths of the Game
Among the merits, of course, is the narrative of the game. We suspect that you and critics will enjoy unraveling the tangle of mysteries related to the people who lived in the mansion in the past. At the same time, the whole plot is as big a puzzle as the competent design of the house.
The slow trickle of story information might seem frustrating at first, but it helps give one motivation to keep going, especially when you solve a puzzle and everything starts to fall into place. Those who love environmental puzzle titles will get some real joy out of Blue Prince.
Worth Playing
Reviewers emphasized that Blue Prince requires a notebook and a pen to pass. They will be needed to solve puzzles and write clues and lock codes. You’ll have to think constantly to solve the puzzles, and you can’t rely on your memory alone.
Blue Prince is an excellent, intricate, and intriguing puzzle game that will have you thinking about solutions even when not playing it. While there’s some minor foibles, coming across a puzzle and scrolling through your notes for an answer from previous runs is very satisfying. Blue Prince is one of the best puzzle game available.
TheSixthAxis
The unusual gameplay, which can be called innovative, was noted. An interesting combination of deck-building mechanics, roguelike, and logical puzzles makes the gameplay not similar to other genre projects.
We can also notice a good atmosphere. Detailed sound effects and environmental elements create a deep immersion into the game’s world.
Weaknesses of the Game
Reviewers attributed the game’s disadvantages to the random location of important items, which can spoil a seemingly successful attempt, and the monotony of some rooms.
Also, the initial stages of the game can seem monotonous because of the limited choice of available rooms. But you just need to keep going, and you will see all the charm.
The difficulty can also blur the impressions, but if you like HARD puzzles, you will like even that.
Many recommend playing the game without any guides to experience the full range of emotions after solving particularly difficult puzzles. It takes about 25 hours to open the 46th room, but as they say, infinity is not the limit, and you can spend many more hours in the game.
To say that I’m utterly infatuated with Blue Prince would be an understatement. There are so many layers to the game; I’ve barely even scratched the surface here in terms of how deep this rabbit hole goes, and I’m 70+ hours in at the time of writing this review.

Conclusion
Blue Prince is unique: it takes a simple premise and fleshes it out with many mysterious threads. It’s an exploratory roguelike that’s unlike any other game out there. The obsession with puzzles comes through on multiple playthroughs, as you always feel like you’re discovering something new.
Blue Prince will be released on April 10 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series. It will also be available on Game Pass and PS Plus subscriptions from day one.
