Dust2 is one of the maps played the most in CS2 since the CS 1.6 version of the game. Even though it is one of the most played maps, most players don’t take their time to learn smokes, which will improve their win rate on such maps, and they play it by default. This guide will show you the most important smokes for Dust2, and you will be able to help your team with smokes.

How to Practice Throwing Smokes
You will need to click the “PLAY” button, go to “PRACTICE” and “CASUAL“, and then turn the three buttons green, as shown on the left side in the video above. Then, pick the map you want to practice your smokes on and click “GO“.
After that, you’ll need to know a few console commands to make it easier to practice; here they are:
- sv_cheats 1 – enables other console commands
- bot_kick – to kick all the bots
- Bind KEY noclip – put any KEY you want so after throwing a smoke, you can click it and fly following your smoke and see how it lands.
- Bind KEY “give weapon_smokegrenade” – put any KEY you want, and it will give you a smoke grenade, so you don’t have to buy it once again.
- Bind KEY “ent_fire smokegrenade_projectile kill; stopsound” – put any KEY you want, and it will make a smoke disappear as you click the key, so you don’t have to wait to throw another smoke.
- sv_rethrow_last_grenade – situational, mostly used to practice flashbangs and molotovs, it makes you repeat your recent grenade and see it from the other perspective, for example, without throwing it once again.
Now, it’s time to get to the most useful Dust2 Smokes: Mid, A Site, and B Site.
Mid Smokes
Mid Doors Smoke
- Why it matters: It prevents CT from controlling Mid.
- Common mistakes: It is hard to make any mistake while throwing this smoke.
Note: This smoke doesn’t require any practice. Place yourself and your crosshair, as shown in the video, and then use a simple left-click throw.
It is one of the common smokes for Dust2 T Side as it prevents CT AWP players from peeking into the Mid and other CT players to push through Mid Double Doors. This one is used in most of the rounds for any strategy as it prevents CT from a lot of information about T side rotations.
X Box Smoke
- Why it matters: Prevent CT AWPer from peeking Top Mid and Short.
- Common mistakes: Smoke falling under the X Box.
Note: To throw smoke, you will need to place yourself and the crosshair as shown in the video, jump, and throw smoke at the same time.
If you’re playing the T side and your teammates decide to go from Long to Short, this one will prevent them from being exposed to the CT side AWP player when they’re running for Short. They can push Short without risk of being killed from both Mid and Lower Tunnels positions.
CT Smoke (Mid to B)
- Why it matters: Prevent CT players from A to see Mid.
- Common mistakes: Smoke does not land in the middle and leaves a gap.
Note: This smoke usually doesn’t require any practice. All you need is to remember the dark spot, place your crosshair there, as shown in the video, and make a left-click throw.
One of the common strategies for the Dust2 T Side is to push B through both Mid and Tunnels at the same time and to do that, you will need that smoke to prevent your team from getting killed by the CT players rotating from A.
A Site Smokes
A Long Start Smoke
- Why it matters: It makes it harder for CT players to peek Long.
- Common mistakes: It is hard to make any mistake while throwing this smoke.
Note: This smoke requires jumping and throwing. Place yourself and your crosshair, as shown in the video, and jump and throw a smoke at the same time.
It makes it harder for the CT players to see T players running out for Long. If they still want to peek Long, they will have to push all the way to the side of the smoke, which makes it easier to kill them.
CT Smoke From Long
- Why it matters: Prevent CT players from peeking at T players crossing from Long to the A Site.
- Common mistakes: Smoke not falling in the middle and leaving a gap.
Note: For this smoke, you will need to place your crosshair as shown in the video, then start running and throwing your smoke. When you practice this smoke, you will see that it doesn’t change much, and whether you throw it one second earlier or one second later, it will still land in a good position.
This is one of the most important smokes when you push A site through Long because it will prevent all the vision for the CT players who rotate from B through CT spawn.
Deep CT Smoke From Long
- Why it matters: Prevent all the vision towards A Long for the CT players coming from CT and B.
- Common mistakes: Smoke falling down on short and not bouncing all the way down to CT.
Note: For this smoke, you will need to remember to place yourself as it is shown in the video, as well as the crosshair placement, and then make a left-click throw. This smoke requires some time before it lands, as it will bounce a few times, as you can see in the video.
This smoke goes deeper into the CT Spawn than the usual CT Smoke, and it is better to use this one when you push from both Long and Short as it makes it easier to kill the players holding Short and Long from the CT Spawn side while they’re exposed to both Short and Long.
Short Boost Smoke
- Why it matters: Prevent CT players from playing the Short Boost position.
- Common mistakes: Smoke falling all the way down to the CT.
Note: For this smoke, place yourself and your crosshair as it is shown in the video and make a simple left-click throw.
This one is better to use together with Short Cross Smoke as it makes it impossible for the CT players to see T players crossing from Short to A Site, which makes it easier for T players to peek at the CT players holding A site.
Short Cross Smoke
- Why it matters: Prevent CT players from seeing Short from Long and help T players to peek A Site.
- Common mistakes: Smoke falling under the window.
Note: For this smoke, place yourself and your crosshair as it is shown in the video and make a simple left-click throw.
As mentioned above, it works better together with Short Boost Smoke, but this one can make a lot of impact without the other smoke, and it still prevents a lot of vision from CT players watching Short from CT Spawn or Long.
B Site Smokes
B Window Smoke
- Why it matters: It prevents CT Players from peeking at B Site from the window.
- Common mistakes: Smoke falling before the window on the ground.
Note: For this smoke, you might need some practice placing your crosshair right, as shown in the video, then making a jump and throwing your smoke.
For B Site, there are two most important smokes to use when you decide to push B Site. This one is a must since it will prevent CT players from rotating from Mid to peak into B Site.
B Door Smoke
- Why it matters: Prevent CT from peeking at B Double Doors and make it easier for T players to cross to the B Site.
- Common mistakes: Smoke falling under the window.
Note: As with the B Window Smoke, you need some practice to place your crosshair exactly as shown in the video, then jump and throw your smoke.
Together with the B Window Smoke, these two smokes are the most important smokes whenever you decide to push the B Site. It prevents all the CT player rotations from Mid, and now you and your teammates playing the T side will only have to clear the B site without being worried about CT rotating players.
Pro Tips for Practicing & Executing Smokes
- Practice in slow motion using “host_timescale” commands.
- Have designated utility players on your team.
- Use jump-throw binds consistently
Summary
