    Gameplay

Dragon's Dogma 2 is an action RPG in an immersive fantasy world where players can enjoy an open-world experience. The game strongly focuses on storytelling and narrative elements, keeping players engaged throughout their journey. One of the game's highlights is the ability to form a party of up to four players, including skilled Pawns with various weapons. Although it is primarily a single-player game, players can feel on an adventure with friends by forming parties.

While traversing unique locations, players face various monsters; some soar through the air, while others remain enigmatic. Players can also utilize the environment to combat these foes.

Each decision made by the player affects the relationships with other characters. The game world is populated by over 1000 unique characters with distinct stories and motivations.

    Map Size

Players will explore a map roughly four times larger than the original. Despite the massive size of the map, Itsuno claims there isn't much wasted space:

"I don't want to go too far and make people think I'm exaggerating, but we've placed items on the map and figured out ways to guide the player's eye so that there aren't any moments when they feel bored," he says.

"This is something that other action games often do as well, and one of the basic elements in such games is the ability to see your destination while being unsure of how to get there, moving from scene to scene. We were able to able to give a lot of consideration to this kind of mapmaking at the grey- and white-box stages, before we really sat down to make them."

"When we climbed mountains, there were times when the closest way to the summit was a straight line there, but nobody takes those routes"; "Everyone takes paths that circle around the mountain, so we'd talk about why they did that instead of using some other route, and the answer is that it looks so tough. It's not that you want to go but can't, it's that you don't even consider taking that route to begin with. That's why there's a number of different paths to the top, and we all take different routes to the summit.

"Nobody thinks of that as a lack of choice, right? That's the kind of thing we talked about, saying that instead of creating a map that lets you go anywhere you want, placing areas that players won't want to visit on it will let us decide where we want to focus on while not making the map feel any less free because users will avoid those other places, just like the mountain we were climbing."

As far as traversing the map, players won't be able to rely on unrestricted fast travel in Dragon's Dogma 2. While the addition of Oxcarts, which enable travel along specific paths, adds a new wrinkle to traversal, the game is designed to be explored on foot.

    New Features and Gameplay Enhancements

Based on what we saw in the trailer, each vocation will have access to four combat skills and a new pad mapping that allows players to restore health without accessing the menu. Furthermore, there will be new vocation-specific actions such as steady shots, defenses, and swift steps. Players can levitate without interruption when casting magicks, and archers will not need to aim.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Just Got Some New Features!

Developers have introduced new animations, random events, and environment destruction to the game. Camping, cooking, and a more realistic world are now available to players.

The World of Dragon's Dogma 2: Expanding the Lore

"Dragon's Dogma" is a thrilling fantasy adventure set in a cursed world. Playing as an Arisen, you can choose from nine unique vocations and team up with up to three Pawns to form a formidable party. Together, you'll face some of the most powerful monsters and challenges that lie ahead.

    Dragon's Dogma 2 - Game Fragment

According to the developers, the story of Dragon's Dogma 2 revolves around the contradictory beliefs of Vermund's humans and Batthal's Beastren. The game occurs in a parallel world where players must pick a side in the conflict and fight against the False Arisen, a powerful enemy threatening the Dragon's supremacy.

    Comparing Dragon's Dogma 2 to DD1

Dragon's Dogma 2 has introduced five new Vocations: Archer, Thief, Mystic Spearhand, Trickster, and Warfarer. The Archer and Thief are separated from the Strider vocation in the first game to focus on their weapon types and skills in Dragon's Dogma 2.

To enhance players' immersion in the game, Oxcarts are introduced as a new travel option to move between different locations. While traveling in an oxcart, players can close their eyes to reach their destination more quickly. However, this doesn't stop time, and the environment around the player keeps changing.

In Dragon's Dogma 2, players can place campsites to pass the time and switch between night and day. These campsites also heal the player and their pawns' HP, and players can talk to their Pawns about essential matters!

Pawns are a significant feature in both Dragon's Dogma games, and they will also be present in the second game as they form the Arisen's party. Pawns assist you by filling gaps in your party's damage or support capabilities with their equipped vocations.

Several enemies from the first game, such as Drakes, Chimeras, Griffins, Harpies, and Saurians, have been confirmed to return in Dragon's Dogma 2. These monsters' attack patterns and weaknesses may be similar to those in the first game. Therefore, playing the first game could help you understand their behavior, making it easier to fight them in the second game.

Augmented weapons are also coming back in Dragon's Dogma 2. They enhance the support capabilities of magic-focused vocations by infusing a gun, be it your own or a party member's, with an element. This infusion allows it to deal increased damage to enemies vulnerable to that specific element.

Spell Syncing, a returning mechanic, enables you and your pawns to sync spells to cast and unleash spells at a faster rate. In the first game, this ability was only available for the Sorcerer's vocation, which may follow the same condition in Dragon's Dogma 2.

    Gameplay Evolutions and New Mechanics

Hideaki Itsuno has been appointed General Manager of Dragon's Dogma II. One of the main objectives of the development team is to enhance the game mechanics based on the first installment and add new features that were not included in the original due to the limitations of technology at the time of production.

    Dragon's Dogma 2 - Game Fragment

According to Itsuno, the team focuses on improving the game experience rather than introducing completely new and innovative elements. The sequel will provide players with a more polished, engaging, story-driven RPG and action-adventure experience. The developers have also added more dialogue for companion characters, which fans requested after the first installment's release. Additionally, they have taken inspiration from games like Grand Theft Auto V to create the game world by borrowing random events to improve the overall game world.
