Captain America is one of the most iconic heroes of both the Marvel comic books and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He is no less iconic in Marvel Rivals, as he leads from the front as a durable – and very fast – Vanguard. Diving into the enemy team while buffing his allies, Cap can be a nuisance to deal with for your enemies, while also capable of making space for his own team. In this guide, we’ll look over his abilities, team-ups and give you some tips to maximize the potential of the First Avenger.

Marvel Rivals Captain America Abilities
Primary Attack – Sentinel Strike
With his Primary, Steve Rogers strikes enemies in front of him with his super strength, dealing moderate damage. However, after he lands the first two blows, Captain America starts using his shield instead of his knuckles, gaining increased range. This means he can chase down opponents that are running away from him, making him an ideal harasser in Marvel Rivals.
Secondary – Living Legend
Captain America wouldn’t be as strong as he is without his vibranium shield, and it’s a focal point of his kit in Marvel Rivals as well. With this ability, Cap raises his shield, blocking incoming attacks in front of him in a small area.
The shield has its own Health pool, but if you put it down, you have to wait a short period before you can pull it out again. It also reflects projectiles if he manages to block them, turning them against the opposing team.
First Ability – Leading Dash
Leading Dash grants extra movement speed to Captain America, similarly to sprint buttons in various FPS games.
However, it also lets him use Fearless Leap, a strong jump that can get him to vantage points, chase down enemies, and get the most out of his other abilities.
Second Ability – Vibranium Energy Saw
Cap launches his shield, damaging the first enemy hit. After it collides with an opponent, the shield can ricochet towards other nearby enemy heroes, dealing decreased damage to them. If Captain America doesn’t hit anything with the initial throw, the shield still ricochets.
Third Ability – Liberty Rush
Liberty Rush lets Captain America crash into his opponents shield first, dealing damage to all enemies hit. This ability is also a great movement tool that can be used to reposition even while in the air!
Fourth Ability – Super-Soldier Slam
Captain America can crash down into the ground just like Venom after using Fearless Leap or jumping down from an elevated point. Super-Soldier Slam deals damage to all enemies hit and launches them up into the air.
Ultimate – Freedom Charge
Bellowing a mighty assemble!, Captain America leads his allies into battle. Freedom Charge gives the First Avenger and his teammates increased movement speed around him, as well as a burst of Bonus Health. Afterwards, Cap replenishes the Bonus Health for both himself and his comrades. He also leaves a trail for his allies to follow which gives the same benefits even while not directly near the First Avenger.
When you use Living Legend or Leading Dash while his ultimate is active, Captain America also knocks up enemies In the air.
Marvel Rivals Captain America Team-Ups
Captain America can team-up with Thor and Storm to become electrified. When picked alongside the God of Thunder, Cap gets electrified attacks through a new ability called Charged Aegis.
After using this ability, his Primary Attacks become charged, dealing extra damage and also ricocheting between opponents near the original target. Cap also gets a small movement speed buff when he uses the extra ability he gets.
Marvel Rivals Captain America How to Play
While Cap has some defensive capabilities and some supportive abilities that can help his team, he is similar to Venom and Thor in playstyle. He likes to get up close and personal with the opposing team, harassing squishies in the backline. While his damage is not that high, he can deal it constantly.
Living Legend is a unique barrier in Marvel Rivals, as it not only blocks, but reflects attacks that hit Captain America from the front. This includes powerful, projectile based Ultimates like Iron Man’s Pulse Bomb or Namors Horn of Proteus – and it can also turn the healing bubbles of Jeff into ones that your team can pick up.
However, it doesn’t negate explosion based abilities like Hela’s Ultimate or the basic attacks of Magneto, unless the projectiles directly hit Captain America’s shield. It’s also much smaller than Doctor Strange’s Shield of the Seraphim, which means that you – or rather, your opponents – have to be more precise for you to launch projectiles back. It’s main issue is that Captain America can’t control the direction of the ricocheted shots.
While Freedom Charge is not the biggest game changer, it can really amplify certain compositions. It makes Captain America a lot harder to take down with the extra movement speed and CC it gives, and if you pair Steve up with similarly fast heroes like Star Lord, Venom, or Luna Snow, your entire squad can zoom around the map in an instant.
However, if you leave Captain America alone with anything other than the biggest tanks in the game, he can basically beat anyone. The fact that Sentinel Strike becomes a ranged attack after two hits means that Duelists and Strategists that changed their mind after a few blows can’t get away from him, and if they somehow gain distance, Cap can chase them down with Super-Soldier Slam and Vibranium Energy Saw. The latter ability can also be used to take down low-health enemies that just turned around at a corner.
Captain America is a solid tank in Marvel Rivals, capable of disrupting backlines while also revitalizing his teammates. While he excels at being a secondary Tank to something like a Doctor Strange or a Peni Parker, he does his job of taking space away from the enemy backline really well – just make sure to cycle your abilities well if you pick up the shield!
