All the Changes to Overwatch 2 in 2025
February 2025 is turning out to be a very busy month regarding new products and reworks. Apex Legends just recently launched Season 24 with some significant updates. About that in our article: Apex Legends Takeover: Latest Updates, Changes, and Release Date.
Blizzard is also planning to make significant changes to Overwatch 2 with the launch of Season 15. According to the company, this will finally revitalize gameplay.
The upcoming 2025 seasons will feature a new perk system for all heroes, a new mode with third-person action, fresh heroes, and the return of Loot Boxes. Let’s talk about everything in order with the Blix team.
To begin with, the game will start a new competitive year that will reset all ranks and rankings. Also, with the launch of Season 15, Overwatch 2 will return to China – a very important event for Blizzard.
Players will also see the return of the Goat meta for Overwatch Classic. This feature was an integral part of Overwatch 1 that disappeared at the launch of the sequel, and here’s what we see – it will be with us again.
We’ll also leave the full video from the developers for you to see for yourself:
Loot Boxes
Loot Boxes were removed from the game in 2022, and now, after all this time, they’re coming back. Loot Boxes will now drop from weekly rewards and event rewards, and the legendary version will be available on the free Battle Pass.
The Premium Battle Pass will include two more Legendary Loot Boxes for paying customers. Rare items or higher-level items will now drop from the Loot Boxes. And if a player opens five in a row, it will guarantee an Epic item. A player who opens 20 in a row will get a Legendary item.
Loot Boxes | Legendary Loot Boxes |
Legendary – 5.10% | Legendary – 100% |
Epic – 21.93% | Epic – 21.93% |
Rare – 96.26% | Rare – 96.26% |
Common – 97.97% | Common – 97.97% |
Stadium
The developers have introduced a new Stadium mode—a separate game mode with a third-person view. Players can purchase improvements between rounds and create their own builds for heroes. In addition, season 15 will see the return of the classic 6 on 6 format with a separate queue.
Skins and Heroes
In the upcoming update, Freya, a Danish bounty hunter armed with an explosive crossbow, will join the team of heroes. In addition, Overwatch 2 Season 15 will also introduce a Mythic skin for the marksman assassin Widow.
Players will also be able to get Rainy Day skins for Mei, Tracer, Orissa, and Mercy, though the question remains as to how exactly the skins will be available.
A new Mythic skin will be for Zenyatta, the Support hero. Called Pixiu Zenyatta. It gives the character an Eastern character and provides three skin options. The Battle Pass will feature Zarya, Doomfist, Orissa, Hanzo, Kiriko, and more skins. New cosmetic items for the shop are also expected for Reinhardt, Kiriko, Moira, Sigma, Winston, and the Junker Queen.
The game will also feature galactic coloring for weapons, which can be purchased with competitive play points. Blizzard is also working on a Chinese hero codenamed Aqua, but he is scheduled to launch in Season 18.
Perks
Blizzard is introducing a perk system, which could help change the battle from season 15 in Overwatch 2.
The perk system works based on character levels – experience is awarded for kills, damage dealt, and playing objectives.
Each hero has two pairs of perks that are earned throughout the match. As Blizzard puts it, heroes start at level one, and at level two, you choose between two “minor” perks.
Level three gives you a choice of two “major” perks, which can be anything from a significant damage increase to an entirely new ability.
All 42 characters have four unique perks, meaning players must work hard to familiarize themselves with 168 new variables.
It all sounds powerful and is designed to diversify the game. For example, Genji can gain 30% Dragonbalde at level two when using his Ulta, and at level three, Swift Strike deals 25 more damage when used shortly after a kill.
Orisa will gain the ability at level two to fortify briefly, grant an additional 100 over health when activated, and, at level three, convert Javelin Spin to launch a barrier instead. Zenyatta will have Snap Kick, which increases knockback by 30%. It is already impressive, and we haven’t even named a minuscule fraction of what’s to come.
LE SSERAFIM
All players will catch Overwatch 2’s new collaboration with Korean pop group Le Sserafim. As part of it, new heroes’ looks will be added to the game.
In 2023, Overwatch 2 and LE SSERAFIM collaborated to release the track “Perfect Night” and several new skins. It was one of the Korean girl group’s biggest hits, with over 400 million listens on Spotify and 115 million views on YouTube.
Right now, it’s still unknown who will be able to get these new skins, but they will be released in March 2025. More details will be released during the season.
Conclusion
Most of the changes will appear in the game on February 18, with the start of Season 15, titled “Honor and Glory”.” Stadium mode, the new hero Freya, Loot Boxes, and hero bans will be added later in Season 16. The character Aqua is expected to be released in Season 18.
