French video game publisher Ubsioft is closing a number of its offices in the Benelux region of Europe, according to a press release. Ubisoft subsidiaries in Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg will be closing doors, and most employees are expected to be let go on April 1.
According to the release, the company cites declining numbers of sales of physical game copies compared to digital sales, among other external factors related to digitalization, as its reason for closing its offices.
Ubisoft is well known for several video game franchises, including Far Cry, Assassin’s Creed, and Rainbow Six: Siege.
At this moment, Ubisoft is undergoing a handful of challenges due to external factors, where under the declining sales numbers of physical games compared to digital sales, the centralization of the market because of the digitalization of all communication channels, the switch from large retail releases to Free to Play models, mobile and seasonal games and fewer big physical shows.
To meet the challenges of the future, Ubisoft management has decided to close a number of subsidiaries in Europe. Unfortunately, Ubisoft Benelux is one of the offices closing, with most of the employees being let go on April 1, 2023.
