In VALORANT, your skill level depends on your matchmaking rating (MMR). If you think of MMR as a long ladder, you will go up if you win and down if you lose. This principle of the player selection system works in most games. It involves very complex calculations that determine how quickly your rank changes.

What Is a Double Rank Up in VALORANT?

Double Rank up in VALORANT happens when you play exceptionally well. It signals to the VALORANT algorithm that you are significantly better than others on the server. And that leads to the game promoting your two ranks simultaneously. That is what is called a Double Rank Up in VALORANT.

The system assesses your skill level via the internal MMR. There is no way at present to see your internal MMR. When the internal MMR is significantly higher than the displayed rank, you are soon in for a double rank-up.

This promotion happens when the VALORANT algorithm (also known as the Gods of Riot Games) thinks you're overachieving at the level you're playing at and decides to promote you by two ranks the next time you move up to the next rank. For example, you can double rank from Ascendant 1 to Ascendant 3 when you reach 100 RR on top of Ascendant 1. You'll skip Ascendant 2 and save three to five games on your way to Radiant!

How to Get a Double Rank Up in VALORANT?

The maximum MMR range on your account is limited to three ranks.

You will get a double rank increase if you are four ranks away from your hidden "MMR".

The game can double your rank if your hidden "MMR" is far from your "RR" rank.

Competitive ranks

During the launch of new Episodes that reset the competitive ranks in Valorant to zero, some players may find themselves playing against more experienced or weaker players. This is very bad for gamers, as games can become unbalanced, and the Valorant algorithm should have an answer to this issue.

The game rewards players who play well and helps them reach their ranking by giving them more RR than the rest. This needs to be more in situations like medal resets, and players can get stuck at an inappropriate rank for longer than necessary.

For this reason, Riot has implemented a system where players get a double rank boost. In games like the one illustrated at the beginning of this article, players get two ranks for just one win.

Since double-up ranking comes at the cost of your rank "going beyond" your MMR, there is no roadmap to getting it. You must work hard and show decent play to get a double-rank boost.

MMR is more manageable to conceptualize with an understanding of how the math works, so in one game, you may get the most frags and get +5 MMR; in another, you might be on the bottom and get +30. This process makes it hard to understand when you will rank up, how that match impacted your MMR, etc. Usually, your MMR fluctuates in a range until you take steps to improve or play more.

The primary way to double rank up in VALORANT is to win as many games in a row as possible. Once you start winning multiple games in a row with a good performance - the algorithm will notice your progress. There is a high chance you will Double Rank Up, and then the algorithm will ensure further balances. This result might mean ranking up or down, depending on your performance.

Double rank-up is beneficial for everyone concerned. It places you in matches against players of a similar skill level and will ensure a fair game for your opponents. Imagine if you are a Bronze Player facing an opponent, shooting like an Immortal. That will not be a pleasant experience, nor will it be a great welcome for beginners.

Summary

If you want to move up in rank quickly, you need to perform well, and if your internal MMR is higher than your rank, you will get a double rank increase, so the system brings both metrics closer together and helps you reach your "true rank".
