Overview of Shopify Rebellion and the roster
Shopify Rebellion came into existence in late 2022. Prior to that, the players were part of Evil Geniuses, one of North America’s leading organizations. However, EG decided to drop their roster and focus on South America, so Shopify Rebellion picked up the team.
Since the changes, SR is yet to win a big international tournament. The team has no problems domestically and received one of the direct TI12 invites because they secured enough DPC points. However, it’s been a while since the team defeated some of the prominent Western European opponents. Some people think they do not have what it takes, but in reality, the squad needs to implement the proper tactics.
In terms of the roster, it consists of the following players:
- Abed “Abed” Yusop
- Artour “Arteezy” Babaev
- Jonáš “SabeRLight-” Volek
- Andreas “Cr1t-” Nielsen
- Tal “Fly” Aizik
Except for SabeRLight-, the rest have been together for years, so they know each other’s strengths and weaknesses. That said, it will be exciting to see if that will help them defeat some of the biggest Dota 2 teams in the world.
Shopify Rebellion’s Results in 2023
As mentioned earlier, Shopify Rebellion had no problems domestically. The team almost always finished first in Tours 1, 2, and 3 and did not lose a single series to anyone except TSM. Unfortunately, the squad’s results haven’t been that good on stage.
Before The International 12, Shopify Rebellion played at The Lima Major 2023. The first Major of the DPC was pretty good for the squad, finishing 3rd in Group B and securing a slot in the Upper Bracket. SR then defeated Team Spirit but were dropped to the lower bracket by Team Liquid.
In the lower bracket, SR won against Evil Geniuses. However, in the semi-finals, Talon Esports got the best of Shopify Rebellion and eliminated them.
The situation at DreamLeague Season 19 was similar because SR performed well in the first group stage. The squad continued its impressive results in Group Stage 2, but this time, the team finished third. After dealing with Tundra Esports, SR had to play against Gaimin Gladiators, and the NA team couldn’t defeat its WEU counterpart, resulting in 3rd place.
The ESL One Berlin Major 2023 was also initially good for Shopify Rebellion. Once again, the team exceeded expectations in the Group Stage and finished among the top 4. Sadly, things went downhill because SR lost to 9Pandas and then EG.
Despite the promising results at DL S19, the squad failed at DreamLeague Season 20. They had horrendous results in the group stage, resulting in an early elimination.
The last Major of the 2023 DPC was in Bali, and Shopify Rebellion did not achieve impressive results. The team survived in the Group Stage and received a slot in the Lower Bracket of the playoffs. Sadly, it had to play against BC, and their journey ended there.
The bad news for SR is that they crumbled at the last big event – Riyadh Masters 2023. Although they were one of the hidden favorites, Arteezy and company lost three matches and got four draws in the groups, resulting in last place.
Shopify Rebellion at The International 12
There is no arguing that SR is one of the most experienced teams at The International 12. Even though the players on the roster have yet to lift the Aegis, they have the experience and skill to do that. Sadly, it will be hard for them to achieve their goal because the team doesn’t have momentum coming into the event.
What you need to understand about Shopify Rebellion is that this is a team full of individuals. We are not saying that they can’t work as a team, but if you compare each player, you will see each is one of the best at their respective position. The problem is that SR is not on the same level as its opponents from Western Europe, tactics-wise.
Some teams, such as Gaimin Gladiators, have been more effective in the last year. They understand the meta better, which is reflected in their results. We hope Shopify Rebellion has spent the time before the start of The International 12 learning everything about the current meta and coming up with effective tactics.
