Valve has released a new Counter-Strike 2 pre-release build, version 1.41.1.3-rc1, in the CS2 beta depot. While not compatible with public matchmaking, this build introduces key gameplay adjustments and major engine optimizations designed to improve performance across the board.

    • 1 Engine and Performance Updates
    • 2 New Defuse Behavior
    • 3 UI and Quality-of-Life Fixes
    • 4 Map Scripting Improvements

    Engine and Performance Updates

Pre-Release Notes for today are up. To test these, opt into the beta depot “1.41.1.3-rc1”:https://t.co/mpNApKzqH9

The update refreshes Counter-Strike 2’s Source 2 engine code, focusing on smoother performance and better CPU efficiency.

    • Bullet penetration simulation has been reworked to reduce CPU load.
    • Particle and sound effects now use multiple cores more efficiently, lowering spikes during heavy combat.

These backend changes mark a continued push from Valve to optimize CS2 for consistent frame rates and stability ahead of future updates.

    New Defuse Behavior

    CS2 Bomb Defuse

One of the standout changes in this build affects C4 defusing.

Players defusing the bomb will now:

    • Automatically lower their weapon viewmodel,
    • Be unable to scope while defusing, and
    • Experience a 150 ms delay before firing after completing the defuse.

This adjustment is meant to make post-defuse engagements more predictable and reduce visual clutter during critical moments.

    UI and Quality-of-Life Fixes

    CS2 UI

Valve also refined several interface elements:

    • Major Highlight clips are now viewable from the Spectator Loadout.
    • The selected player in the Team Counter is easier to spot.
    • Inventory context menus open relative to the cursor position.
    • The weapon mode indicator on the HUD has been moved next to the ammo count for quicker visibility.

    Map Scripting Improvements

    CS2 Map Scripting

Developers and mapmakers received expanded scripting support, including full cs_script enum behavior and new functions for tracing, damage flags, and round-end logic. A new gear slot labeled “BOOSTS” has also been added, hinting at potential future item flexibility.

You can find official patch notes here.

    What’s Next

Though this build isn’t available in matchmaking yet, the steady flow of technical and gameplay updates suggests Valve is tightening CS2’s foundations before wider releases.

Players can test the beta build by opting into the CS2 beta depot through Steam. Valve’s official guide explains the process in detail.
