It’s important to understand that strong heroes at higher ranks may not perform as well at lower ranks due to differences in macro play and execution. In this article, we will evaluate offlane characters by their performance, starting with the least effective and concluding with the most effective.

Tier 3 – Not Recommended for Pick

Windranger

Dota 2 hero: Windranger

Windranger has some independence during the laning phase, but her performance in the current meta is lacking. She has been weakened in recent patches, and the variety of viable builds for her is limited. To succeed, she needs to win her lane decisively, which can be challenging given the unpredictability of support players. As it stands, Windranger is not a reliable choice in this patch and is better suited for turbo games.

Tips

• Shackleshot calculates latch angles based on where it was originally cast, not from Windranger’s current location.
• What sets good Windrangers apart from bad Windrangers is how frequently Shackles are cast on creeps. Bad Windrangers will almost always target it on a hero, even if there’s a far larger window to miss the latch.

Wraith King

Wraith King: This hero is not very effective in the third position due to a weak laning phase, high greed, and a reliance on items. However, at lower ranks (up to 3000), he has a high win rate of 54%. This is likely attributed to his opponents’ lack of understanding of macro play.

Tips

• Wraithfire Blast is a slow projectile, and the animation is extremely obvious. Use the stun as close to the enemy as you can to prevent people from disjointing it or running away. Or pump fake and cancel the cast animation to mess with enemies and bait defensive spells.
• Reincarnation’s cooldown is frozen while you’re in Wraith Form, but Refresher Orb can still bring Reincarnation back off cooldown.

Doom

Dota 2 hero: Doom

Doom is a flexible hero, suitable for both aggressive and passive play styles. However, the lack of team support after using ultimates can be problematic at medium and lower ranks.

Tips

• Devour bonus gold is unreliable and granted when the buff expires.
• Learn the abilities and auras of neutral creeps and figure out which one best matches your playstyle at various points of the game.
• Doom has a pretty long-cast animation. It can often times be more reliable to initiate with your Infernal Blade attack+stun as opposed to blinking in and trying to get a raw Doom off first.

Mars

Mars is a great initiator for team fights, but his effectiveness relies heavily on the player’s skill. In mid-level ranks, players often make mistakes when using his spear and arena abilities. However, if a player knows how to use these skills correctly, Mars can be elevated to a second tier in terms of effectiveness.

Tips

• Mars’s Dauntless innate procs against enemies in fog. If you’re farming by yourself, you could keep an eye on your buffs to see if enemies may be rotating to kill you.
• Spear of Mars provides flying vision as it travels, and the vision lingers around an impaled enemy.

Primal Beast & Marci

Primal Beast and Marci require the right draft to be effective. Primal Beast synergizes well with Grimstroke, while Marci reaches her potential when paired with Wisp or supports that can initiate kills. Without the proper team composition, their effectiveness significantly decreases.

Tips

• If you want a very short and quick Onslaught, don’t use the spell hotkey to cancel the wind up animation. Instead, use your ‘stop’ hotkey to immediately cancel the wind up. This bypasses the mini-cooldown the spell goes on to prevent accidental mashing.
• You can cast Dispose on an ally’s top bar portrait to easily target them. Useful if you’re trying to save a specific target in a sea of summons or illusions in a chaotic team fight.

Sand King

Most players prefer the Sandshroud facet for Sand King, but pro player Daxak recommends the Dust Devil facet for enhanced mobility and faster farming. While this option is better suited for experienced players, beginners should stick with the classic Sandshroud.

Tips

• Burrowstrike ignores Linken’s Sphere and Lotus Orbs.
• If you’re going to shift-queue your Blink Dagger after the Epicenter animation, choose your destination at the very last second. Things can change during the long ass cast animation. Positions can move, TPs come in, Blinks go out, empires fall.

Tier 2 – Stable Averages

Beastmaster & Magnus

Both Beastmaster and Magnus require strong macro play; otherwise, their full potential is difficult to achieve. Beastmaster becomes powerful with Aghanim’s Scepter, but his effectiveness relies on precise teamwork. Magnus can be played effectively with a team aura build or by adopting a more greedy, damage-oriented approach.

Tips

• You can use Wild Axes to cut down the treeline next to you to improve your vision when laning.
• If you ground target Shockwave from fog, you won’t reveal yourself to the enemy who gets hit by it. If you directly target them, they’ll get a vision of you.

Timbersaw

Dota 2 hero: Timbersaw

Timbersaw is very strong in favorable matchups but is vulnerable to magic damage. He can be countered by heroes like Drow Ranger, which significantly reduces his effectiveness.

Tips

• Timbersaw’s Exposure Therapy gives him mana for every tree he kills.
• Timber Chain gives a very small slice of vision as it travels and gives 400 ground vision for a split second once it reaches the maximum distance. You can use this to quickly scout inside the Rosh pit if you don’t want to spend Chakram for vision.

Centaur & Slardar

Dota 2 hero: Centaur

Centaur focuses on teamplay and auras, while Slardar is more individualistic and can carry the game independently.

Tips

• Retaliate damages towers. Be a boss and draw aggro from the tower to speed up the pushing process. If you ever want to force aggro, just right-click any enemy hero anywhere on the map while you’re in tower range, or attack+move their top bar portrait if they’re in vision, or just be the closest target attacking the tower.
• Increase your Bash attack counter on jungle or lane creeps. The buff lasts indefinitely and won’t increase/proc on building or ward targets.

Lycan

Lycan: Effective in a team, but requires a solid understanding of split–pushing and competent initiation.

Tips

• Wolves are quite possibly the strongest scouting tool in the game. They can serve as two moving, permanently invisible, temporary observer wards on demand. Use them to scout, check/kill runes, block/stack camps, body block targets, and most importantly, follow around high priority targets.

Axe & Legion Commander

Dota 2 hero: Legion Commander

Axe and Legion Commander: Although both heroes have a high win rate, they require skilled execution. They are effective against heroes that damage themselves during Blade Mail’s dueling or aggro phase.

Tips

• Enemies will follow you around when taunted in Berserker’s Call. If you value positioning more than damage, you can walk or Force Staff after a Call to shepherd taunted enemies in your direction.
• Strategically draw aggro from creeps by clicking enemy heroes to potentially get a Moment of Courage proc when going for last hits or denies.

Tier 1 – The Most Effective Heroes

Vengeful Spirit

Vengeful Spirit: At ratings of 5–6k, it boasts an impressive win rate of 56–58%. The Vengeful Spirit is versatile, capable of saving allies, initiating fights, and is highly survivable.

Tips

• Wave of Terror is a useful spell for scouting out dangerous territory because of its massive range and lingering vision. Also useful for dewarding cliffs.
• Wave of Terror damage can cancel consumable regen like Salves or Clarities from long range. It’s also useful at breaking Blink Daggers from long range.

Night Stalker & Dawnbreaker

Dota 2 hero: Dawnbreaker

Night Stalker and Dawnbreaker are both team-independent heroes that dominate fights. Dawnbreaker is considered one of the best offlane heroes in the current meta, especially in greedy drafts.

Tips

• Use TPs liberally during night time. Show yourself in one lane, then TP to another once the wave dies. This makes your ganks far more unpredictable.
• If you want to be extremely annoying in lane, cancel the Starbreaker cast animation to mindgame enemies and bait them into getting complacent about dodging it. Be warned, however, you have to have quick fingers to cancel the animation.

Bristleback

Dota 2 hero: Bristleback

Bristleback is a strong choice for low and mid ranks due to player unfamiliarity. With a strong start using Sange & Yasha and Bloodstone, he becomes nearly unkillable.

Tips

• Viscous Nasal Goo’s armor reduction works on Rosh. Combined with his good tanking ability, teams with Bristle can take Rosh fairly early.
• Bristleback is a highly effective hero for taking advantage of stacked ancients. With a few items, you should be able to take ancients literally without even looking, thanks to Quill Spray.

Visage

Dota 2 hero: Visage

Visage: A versatile hero capable of purchasing items for himself or team-oriented items. He applies pressure to lanes effectively, but it is challenging to play like a pro on this hero.

Tips

• You can Grave Chill any enemy or neutral unit. If you see the enemy coming to gank you, just Chill the nearest creep and make a break for it. If you and your Familiars are trying to catch up to an enemy, Chill a neutral in the jungle to get in range quicker.
• Resummoning Familiars automatically refreshes their Stone Form cooldowns.
