The South American Dota 2 scene has never looked better than today. TI 12 will feature four teams from the region, something that hasn’t happened before. Although all of them deserve some attention, there is no arguing that Evil Geniuses is the most special.
This organization became a part of the South American Dota 2 scene just one year ago. However, thanks to gathering some of the best players from Thunder Awaken and beastcoast, it quickly became the leader in the region. That’s why it’s no surprise it was one of the first to secure a direct TI 12 slot.

Evil Geniuses Overview
Regarding the South American Dota 2 scene, Evil Geniuses is the biggest name right now. As mentioned, the organization decided to join in late 2022 when it dropped its North American roster. We expected to see five completely new players. However, instead, Evil Geniuses got the signatures of a few names from BC and Thunder Awaken.
The current Evil Geniuses roster looks as follows:
- Crhistian “Pakazs” Savina
- Jean Pierre “Chris Luck” Salazar
- Adrián “Wisper” Dobles
- Farith “Matthew” Puente
- Jose “Panda” Padilla
The new roster has stayed the same since 23 November 2022, meaning the players have a lot of experience. It probably goes without saying, but this organization has won pretty much everything in Dota 2. Hence, the expectations for the new roster was high. With that said, let’s learn more about the squad’s performance in 2023 so far.
Evil Geniuses’ Results in 2023
Even though Evil Geniuses has a pretty good roster and performs much better than most people expect, we have yet to see the team win a tournament, and this applies to all squads from South America because there hasn’t been a single team from that region that has won an international competition.
Evil Geniuses’s results in 2023 were pretty good, and it all started with The Lima Major. Following an impressive group performance, the team had to play against Entity but failed to win. EG defeated beastcoast and Team Aster in the Lower Bracket before losing to Shopify Rebellion. This SR squad played under the EG banner a few months ago.
After the good results in Lima, EG continued its journey. However, the squad had to compete this time in DreamLeague Season 19. Even though the South American roster achieved pretty good results in the first Group Stage, it couldn’t do the same in the second one. Consequently, the team failed to secure a slot for the Playoffs.
The ESL One Berlin Major 2023 situation was pretty good for the squad. After finishing 6th, it had to play in the Lower Bracket, where it defeated Shopify Rebellion, Talon Esports, and OG. Sadly, the team couldn’t continue its conquest after losing to Team Liquid.
DreamLeague Season 20 was another big event that the team took part in. Even though it couldn’t win one match in the Group Stage, it finished 4th after getting seven draws. This gave it a slot for the Second Group Stage, where the squad finished 6th, failing to secure a slot for the Playoffs.
The bad news for Evil Geniuses is that the squad failed at The Bali Major 2023. EG finished last in Group B after losing five matches and getting three draws, which meant it couldn’t continue to the event’s next stage.
As for the Riyadh Masters, Evil Geniuses did not perform that well in the Group Stage, so it had to play in the Lower Bracket. Sadly, it faced Team Aster, and the Chinese powerhouse ripped right through it.
Lastly, we have the BetBoom Dacha 2023, the invite-only event that gave Evil Geniuses a slot. The bad news is that EG finished 3rd, meaning it had to play in the LB, where it met beastcoast. Even though EG won this matchup several times earlier this year, it couldn’t do the same this time and lost in R1 of the LB.
Can Evil Geniuses surprise at The International 12?
Considering the team’s results in 2023, we expect Evil Geniuses to achieve good results at The International 12. Even though it will likely not win the tournament, it’s possible to finish among the Top 5.
2023 has been a fantastic year for the South American Dota 2 scene, particularly Evil Geniuses. The squad performed on par with most Western Rivals, meaning 2024 should be even better. Don’t forget that Valve removed the DPC for next season, which means we should see many more tournaments, including smaller invite-only competitions. Who knows, this might be the year when we finally see a South American squad win one of the big Dota 2 tournaments.
